Nestled in a charming neighbourhood filled with historic cottages, Portobello Cottage is a delightful heritage bungalow from the 1890s, showcasing a rich history while offering exciting possibilities for modern living. Our client recognised the potential of the cottage, which underwent some changes to feature an open-plan living area that combines the kitchen, dining space, and sitting area, all bathed in natural light from a large window. This design not only maintains the cottage's vintage character but also creates a cosy atmosphere perfect for city living. Although compact at about 50 square metres, the smart design includes a newly added bedroom and bathroom, significantly enhancing functionality and invitingness. Our goal for the interior design was to blend the vintage charm of the bungalow with modern touches, using earthy tones like greens, blues, and warm neutrals to connect the indoors with the beauty of nature outside. Textures and subtle patterns were introduced to create distinct areas within the open-plan layout, enhancing warmth and invitingness. A standout feature is the innovative storage solutions that maximise space while keeping the bungalow beautiful and functional within a small budget. The gallery wall in the living area showcases our client's art collection, including a piece by Michael Collins that depicts an Irish landscape reminiscent of Cork, our client's hometown, complemented by artworks featuring Ogham language and themes like the Children of Lir, beautifully blending old and new styles. Portobello Cottage stands as a testament to the beauty of heritage homes in the city, having transformed into a cosy space that honours its past while embracing the future, with our client's love for their home and art adding a personal touch that makes this cottage truly unique.
